    A Model for Positive Leadership in Sports Howard Gauthier — The aim of this paper is to present an adaptation of a model on positive leadership as it applies to the sports industry. The original model was published in the journal, Strategic Leadership Review. The model presents five strategies or dimensions a leader uses to promote a positive organization. These strategies include (a) building a positive structure, (b) executing with a positive purpose, (c) creating a positive climate, (d) developing positive relationships, and (e) interacting with positive communications. The outcome of these strategies leads to motivated participants, increased performance, and increased success. (1-17)

  • Exploring the Parent-Coach and Child-Athlete Relationship in the Recreational Sport ContextNicholas A. Pitas, Christopher J. Harrist, Charles Boyd Hegarty, Andrew J. Mowen — Parent-coaches are individuals who coach their own children, child-athletes, in sports. Although they are widespread in recreational sports, little research has been conducted on the relationship between parent-coaches and child-athletes. Given the importance of their roles as both coaches and parents separately, the parent-coach phenomenon deserves further inquiry. This was an exploratory study with the goal of adding to the limited research already conducted on the parent-coach phenomenon, focusing specifically on recreational sports; this is in contrast to past research which has focused on a more competitive level. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with parent-child dyads, focusing on the perceptions of both parent-coaches and child-athletes. Parent-coaches and child-athletes identified a number of common themes: a perception of higher pressure and expectations, an awareness of favoritism as a potential issue, and a desire for equal treatment of all athletes. Suggestions for applications to coaching education, as well as possible directions for future research are discussed. (18-52)

Linderman, Peter Titlebaum — The purpose of this study was to develop a better understanding of how women’s college basketball coaches are managing and promoting their summer basketball camps and to learn methods from others that have proven to be successful. The present research was conducted through a questionnaire completed by college basketball coaches across all divisions of play. This article provides information in the following areas: marketing of basketball camps, financial aspects of basketball camps, structuring of a basketball camps. (53-65)

  • The Effect of Selected Ankle Stabilizers and a Novel Prophylactic Ankle Brace on Athletic Performance: A Pilot StudyDani Moffit, Shae Struhs — Ankle injuries are common in athletic endeavors, especially those that require sudden stops and movements or running and jumping activities. Multiple methods are used to prevent injuries, including ankle taping, wearing specialized shoes, and prophylactic ankle bracing. Many athletes are wary of using these protective devises for fear of decreased athletic performance. This study examined two commonly used prophylactic ankle braces, the Swede-O and McDavid; a novel brace, the Ankle Roll Guard; prophylactic taping, and no bracing, on four common activities in athletics. One-way analysis of variance tests revealed no significant differences among five bracing conditions on four activities which simulate basketball skills revealing that athletic performance did not appear to be affected by the use of any of the bracing. These results demonstrate that athletes can consider a new choice of prophylactic ankle brace (i.e., the Ankle Roll Guard) when selecting protection during athletic participation, without concern of interference with performance.   • Perception Differences in Children Learning to Play Golf with Traditional or Modified Equipment Lindsey Sams, Dean R. Gorman, Cathy D. Lirgg — The purpose of this study was to examine self-reported differences in competence and enjoyment between learners using modified and those using traditional golf equipment as well as potential effects these factors may have on intent for future participation. Surveys measured golf participation and self-perceptions of 99 children ranging in age from 7 to 12 years concerning perceived competence, enjoyment and intention to continue participation. Results revealed no differences for enjoyment, perceived competence or intention between children learning with traditional equipment and modified equipment even though traditional users reported significantly higher experience levels than did modified users. Enjoyment was a strong predictor of intention to continue participation for both groups. Results of this study suggest that using modified equipment may be an equally effective way to learn golf and increase retention, especially with younger children. (81-106)
