The
development of activities and learning experiences for youth in
both school and community-based settings has focused on the dimensions
of challenge, cooperatative learning, and group and individual
image building processes. Teaching Lifelong Leisure Activities
is intended to serve as an activity and lesson plan tool for teachers
and activity leaders. The format of the various activity concepts
provides a structure for organizing activities and experiences.
It is a skeleton framework for the teacher-leader planning process.
While it provides a structural approach for such planning, it
also permits for individual creativity and adaptation on the part
of the planner.
Creative planning allows the teacher-leader to focus on single
session activities that culminate quickly or on dispersed, sequentially
integrated experiences that can be offered in units, weeks, semesters,
or throughout the school year as appropriate.
The authors' intent through this text is to capture the excitement
of outdoor-oriented experiences that portend lifetime carry-over
value for all participants. The integration of outdoor activities
in school and community-based organizational program offerings
can enhance healthy living lifestyles, develop hobbies and skill
interests, and contribute to environmental impact awareness.
The activities described in this book are inherently dangerous
activities and any person, especially if inexperienced, undertaking
them should approach them with caution and under appropriate supervision.
