This book
is a useful addition to the literature of environmental education.
This book is a teacher's handbook; it is not a text for the pupil,
not a curriculum course of study, not an exhortation to teachers
and pupils, but a curriculum supplement. It should prove helpful
to teachers at any grade level.
As one might
expect, such a text, prepared and written by three authors, each
of whom is recognized as a master teacher, has a wealth of practical
suggestions for vitalizing classroom teaching. These suggested
activities are built around a listing of concepts which were derived
from research undertaken at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln
and validated from the point of view of the educator for relevance
to the problems of environmental education. Supporting the concepts
and activities are listings of books, film, and suppliers of free
and inexpensive instructional materials.
As noted
in the pages dealing with the theoretical foundation of environmental
education, the subject is interdisciplinary in nature relating
to all grade levels and subject areas, a characteristic which
every teacher should exploit. In the many aspects of the subjects
presented in the volume, teachers will find numerous centers of
interest to challenge their classes.
