The purpose of Sport Management: Career Planning and Professional
Preparation is four-fold. First, to provide a concise but
thorough introduction to the sport management profession, including
a glimpse into the history and tremendous growth of the field
of sport management as a distinct subdiscipline within physical
education. Second, to enable men and women who are contemplating
a career within the world of sport to develop an accurate understanding
of what life is like as a professional in the business of sport,
the business of sport management. Third, to explain the various
curricular options which are available within the sport management
program at the State University of New York, Brockport. And, fourth,
to provide insight as well as strategies and tactics that may
be helpful for future young professionals in their efforts to
secure apporopriate full time positions in the world of sport
upon graduation from college.
This book is divided into five chapters plus 25 appendices. In
chapter one the reader is provided with an overall introduction
to the sport management profession. Information is presented about
the early history as well as more recent developments relative
to the professional preparation programs for managerial and administrative
postiions within a wide variety of sport organizations and businesses.
Chapter two provides information about how a student might propare
oneself for a career position within the world of sport. Chapter
three explains in detail the curricular options available in the
sport management program at State University of New York, Bollege
at Brockport. Chapter four examines the advantages and challenges
associated with a variety of experiential learning opportunities
including different types of field experiences, i.e.., practica
and internships. And, chapter five includes hints, strategies
and tactics useful in making oneself marketable in the very competitive
world of sport business, including credential preparation and
preparing for job interview.
The author, an experienced manager in sport and higher education
as well as in the world of business, attempts to answer many of
the most frequently asked questions by young men and women who
are thinking about a career within the world of sport management.
Hopefully, this book will serve as a foundation upon which each
reader will be able to develop an ever greater understanding and
appreciation of the challenges, problems and rewards associated
with the business of sport. For not only will sport itself face
numerous problems and challenges in the years and decades to come
but those men and women who are intimately involved in the management
of such programs will also face significant challenges as they
endeavor to perform their varied responsibilities and duties as

ABOUT
THE AUTHOR
Dr.
William F. Stier, Jr., a distinguished service professor,
is the graduate coordinator of Athletic Administration and directs
the coaching certification program and the sports management concentration
at the State University of New York at Brockport. He received
his Ed.D. from the University of South Dakota and began his coaching
career in the junior high schools. On the high school level he
has coached cross country, baseball, track and field, and basketball
and served as athletic director. At the college level, he coached
basketball as well as assumed positions of athletic director and
chairperson of Health, Physical Education and Recreation in both
public and private institutions of higher education. Dr. Stier
has authored over 270 scholarly articles and has published sixteen
books in sport management, marketing, fundraising and coaching.
He presently serves as editor of two scholarly, refereed (blind
review) professional journals: The Physical Educator and
the International Journal of Sport Management. He is also
currently listed in Who's Who in International Education
and has received numerous honors and awards.
