Traditionally,
the history of Texas is dominated by myths and tales of honor,
passion and glory. The Alamo, San Jacinto, cotton, cattle, and
oil generate the images which often overshadow other elements
of the history of this state. However, Texas history encompasses
much more than this, and its history in many ways becomes even
more dramatic when we look beyond these well-known images. Myths,
while not wholly accurate, often cause us to lose sight of the
fact that Texas history is deeper, more complex, and more exciting.
This text
consists of a collection of essays which focus on the political
history of the Lone Star State. They incorporate the findings
and interpretations of the most recent research in this field,
and present the student with a view of the Texas past as seen
through the eyes of its leading historians.
